Secure Storage Information

Infomation on our ranges of security safes, fire safes, data safes and filing cabinets.
Q: How is fire resistance measured for safes?
Fire resistance is usually measured by the number of minutes a safe or cabinet has been tested to protect its contents when exposed to fire. The longer the period in minutes, the greater the fire resistance offered.

This rating is normally obtained by measuring the internal temperature of the safe whilst being exposed to temperatures around 1,000 °C in a furnace. The critical temperature before paper records char or combust is about 177 °C. Computer media cabinets, however, are tested to maintain internal temperatures below approximately 52 °C - which is the maximum temperature most media manufacturers recommend.

If you primarily want to protect paper documents from fire and pilferage then a fire safe is required. These safes typically offer one or two hour fire protection for paper along with physical security to resist attack. See our Sentry Fire Safes Here.

Our range or Filing Cabinets offer fire resistance for storing larger quantities of files and documents.

Computer media requires specific protection and needs to be stored in a purpose built Data Safe. Most computer disks and tapes should not be exposed to temperatures over 52 °C or humidity over 85%. These cabinets offer a high level of fire resistance combined with protection from damaging magnetic fields, dust and pilferage.
Q: Do you sell Austen Safes?
A: Yes. AUSTEN SABS Category rated high security safes and drop safes offer sophisticated defence against both skilled and unskilled burglary. Manufactured using high technology barrier materials to ensure the strongest protection against attempted burglary. Highly recommended by the South African insurance industry.

Austen SABS Category 5 Safes provide an SA Insurance Association overnight cash rating of R300,000. The door locks are protected by dual plates of tempered glass which will activate 2 randomly placed relocking devices in the event of an attack on the safe providing the highest quality in protection.
Q: What are cash ratings?
A: A cash rating is the amount of cash for which an insurance company will offer overnight cover. All cash ratings quoted are the SA Insurance Association's recommended ratings. The actual amount of cover can vary between insurance companies and may be higher or lower than the recommended rating. If this is important to you, you should check what cover your insurance company will offer for the product. The recommended rating is usually on the basis that the product is installed according to the manufacturers instructions eg. bolted down.

The safes cash rating is an indication of the level of security that it offers. It should reflect factors such as the thickness of the safe's walls, quality of the lock and bolt work, and barrier materials used. As a guide, the higher the cash rating the more secure the safe. Generally cash ratings are multiplied by 10 to obtain a non-cash or jewellery rating. So, as a guide, you can store approximately R50,000 worth of jewellery in a R5,000 cash rated safe.

We offer a range of low cash rated safes which are often suitable for the home, office or hospitality industry. Our High Cash Rated Safes offer greater resistance against attack. These safes have been SABS approved and are SA Insurance Association rated. This grading system starts at Category 1. Each category has been been given a corresponding cash rating eg. a Grade 2 safe has a cash rating of R12,500. See our full range of Cash Rated Safes Here.
